Journal of LGBTQ Issues in Counseling, 15 (2021) 1 (jan-mar), p. 16-37
bron: Journal of LGBTQ Issues in Counseling jaargang: 15 (2021) 1 (jan-mar), p. 16-37
samenvatting: Eleven individuals who identified as transgender people of color (TPOC) were interviewed about their retrospective school-age experiences and how they learned to cope during youth and adolescence. Consensual qualitative research methodology was used to code and analyze data. Four key themes were identified including a model of TPOC identity development. Implications for the practice of school counseling and recommendations for future research are discussed.

Psychological Distress, Alcohol Misuse and Stigma to Seek Psychological Help in a Community Sample of Sexual Diverse Women of Color  / Alison Cerezo & Tiffany O?Shaughnessy

Journal of LGBTQ Issues in Counseling, 15 (2021) 1 (jan-mar), p. 59-76
bron: Journal of LGBTQ Issues in Counseling jaargang: 15 (2021) 1 (jan-mar), p. 59-76
samenvatting: Sexual diverse women of color (SDWOC) face significant heightened experiences of discrimination across multiple axes of identity. We sampled 182 SDWOC of Latinx and African American descent to examine factors associated with participants' self-stigma to seek psychological help. Results indicated that intersectional discrimination across race and sexual orientation was positively associated with self-stigma to seek psychological help. Mediation analyses revealed that psychological distress was not a significant mediator; however, alcohol use disorder partially mediated the relation between intersectional discrimination and self-stigma to seek psychological help. Counselors must consider the role of alcohol use and self-stigma to reduce the treatment gap.

Microaggressions and Health Outcomes among Racially and Ethnically Diverse Bisexual Women  / Wendy B. Bostwick ...[et al.].

Journal of Bisexuality, 21 (2021) 3 (jul-sep), p. 285-307
bron: Journal of Bisexuality jaargang: 21 (2021) 3 (jul-sep), p. 285-307
samenvatting: This study assessed the relationship between microaggressions and health outcomes among bisexual women. Participants came from the Women's Daily Experiences Study, a mixed method study of bisexual women recruited in Chicago (N = 112). Using cross-sectional data, we tested bivariate and multivariate associations of lifetime and past year sexual orientation microaggressions with depression, anxiety, self-assessed mental and physical health, and substance use. We also tested relationships between intersectional microaggressions, related to racial and sexual minority identities, and health outcomes among a sub-sample of women of color (n = 64). The majority of participants reported experiences of microaggressions in their lifetime and in the past year. Multivariate analyses revealed significant associations between lifetime and past year sexual orientation microaggressions, mental health and substance use. Among bisexual women of color, intersectional microaggressions were significantly associated with higher levels of depression, anxiety, and poorer self-assessed mental health. Implications and future directions are discussed.

Exploring Clinicians' Knowledge, Beliefs and Clinical Experiences Related to Pansexual Youth  / Brisa Peña & Eman Tadros

Journal of Bisexuality, 21 (2021) 3 (jul-sep), p. 308-331
bron: Journal of Bisexuality jaargang: 21 (2021) 3 (jul-sep), p. 308-331
samenvatting: Pansexuality is the emotional, romantic, and/or sexual attraction toward people regardless of their biological sex, gender identity, or gender expression. This study examined what clinicians know about pansexuality and their clinical experiences; 84 clinicians from different cultural backgrounds with an age range from 20-60 years old were examined. Participants were recruited through purposive sampling. Recruitment for the study utilized email advertisements containing a description of the study. Further, participants responded to open-ended survey questions related to working therapeutically with pansexual youth. Thematic analysis was utilized to gain a deeper understanding of specific ideologies, biases, and knowledge that these clinicians held. Pertinent themes emerged from the thematic analysis: unique challenges experienced by pansexual youth, working therapeutically with pansexual youth, and therapists? beliefs and assumptions. The results showcased the need for clinicians to be more mindful of biases, to further their training on sexual minority populations, and for overall advocacy. Clinical implications suggest professional mental health clinicians, therapists, and psychologists to implement trainings and practices that include pansexual youth and the LGBTQ + community without personal biases and assumptions in therapy sessions or during assessments.

Sexual Health, but What Else? A Critical Review of the Literature Focused on Bisexual Men in the United States  / Rachel Chickerella & Sharon G. Horne.

Journal of Bisexuality, 22 (2022) 1 (jan-mar), p. 30-70
bron: Journal of Bisexuality jaargang: 22 (2022) 1 (jan-mar), p. 30-70
samenvatting: Although bisexual individuals have higher rates of mental health concerns than their lesbian and gay counterparts, and higher rates of unsafe sex practices and substance use (Feinstein & Dyar, 2017; Gonzalez et al., 2017; Green & Feinstein, 2012), bisexual men, in particular, remain an under-researched population (Feinstein & Dyar, 2017; Schrimshaw et al., 2018). Such health disparities have been tied to internalized biphobia and masculinity concerns (Mackenzie, 2019; Schrimshaw et al., 2013). Further, bisexual men of color experience marginalization related to race and ethnicity as well as sexual orientation, which can negatively impact health (Arnold et al., 2017; Muñoz-Laboy et al., 2018). Utilizing Google Scholar, Pubmed and Psychinfo, 180 articles that included variations of the terms bisexual men (see methods for details) were identified from the past five years. Articles that did not meet inclusion criteria (e.g. were not focused exclusively on bisexual men, comprised of non-U.S. samples, or were non-empirical) were filtered out, resulting in 33 articles in the final sample. The final articles were qualitatively analyzed through a thematic analysis of the article?s keywords. The 33 articles included in the final review included themes that largely fit into the framework of minority stress (Meyer, 2003) when interpreted thematically by the reviewers. The two main categories of the findings included sexual health and identity concerns for bisexual men. In the last five years, only fourteen articles were focused on aspects of experience outside of the scope of sexual health. Sexual health continues to be a primary focus of research with bisexual men. Bisexual men are more than their sexual health; it would be beneficial to know about a broad spectrum of their experiences, including resiliency in the face of stigma, relational and family dynamics, and navigation of work and other dimensions.

bron: TSQ : Transgender Studies Quarterly jaargang: 9 (2022) 2 (may), p. 187-195
samenvatting: On April 22, 2021, the editors of this special issue interviewed activists Sean Saifa Wall and Pidgeon Pagonis. Sean Saifa Wall is a Black intersex and transgender activist known as the cofounder of Intersex Justice Project. Over the past decade, Pidgeon Pagonis rose to visibility as an activist on behalf of intersex people. They created viral content, two films, cocreated the Intersex Justice Project, and currently are wrapping up a memoir. Today, they're embarking on the journey of a lifetime: figuring out their life's purpose(s) post intersex activism. Wall and Pagonis cofounded the Intersex Justice Project (IJP) with Lynnell Stephani Long in 2016. In addition to centering Black and Brown liberation, IJP collaborates with activists in the Global South and uses direct action to end nonconsensual surgeries performed on minors. Among IJP's accomplishments, perhaps the most notable is their historic #EndIntersexSurgery campaign.

samenvatting: My art covers a wide range of styles and formats and most often revolves around my relation to my body as a disabled, intersex, nonbinary, biracial, and fat being. My activism and work are primarily focused on disability justice, which I view as inherently connected and inextricable from my other experiences. I personally aim to embody the ten principles of disability justice as conceptualized by those at Sins Invalid, a performance art troupe made up primarily of disabled QTBIPOC artists and performers. In thinking of the principles of intersectionality, collective liberation, and cross-movement organizing, I was interested in the way both disabled and intersex beings (as well as many others) continue to experience the living legacy of eugenics, particularly within in our health-care systems. It was through this exploration that I came into understanding myself as intersex. I spoke with Sean Saifa Wall (he/him), an incredible intersex activist.

One Out Gay Cop: Gay Moderates, Proposition 64, and Policing in Early AIDS-Crisis Los Angeles, 1969-1992  / Nic John Ramos, Alex Burnett.

Journal of the History of Sexuality, 31 (2022) 3 (sep), p. 361-393
bron: Journal of the History of Sexuality jaargang: 31 (2022) 3 (sep), p. 361-393
samenvatting: In Late 1992 the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Police Advisory Task Force (hereafter the Task Force) unveiled a victory more than fifteen years in the making: the publication of a gay, lesbian, and bisexual (GLB) awareness training manual for the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD). Its appearance coincided with the LAPD?s decision to recruit openly gay police officers and the emergence of Pride Behind the Badge, an association of previously closeted officers recently formed to staff LAPD recruitment events and trainings. As an apparent reversal of the LAPD's long-standing hostility toward homosexuals, the manual signaled the LAPD's growing willingness to protect white gay and lesbian privacy and property through policing. The manual, for instance, reminded officers that "self-identified," or out, gays "have higher average household incomes" and "significantly higher educational achievements," and they "vote more than non-gays." Such statements indirectly described the predominantly white, professional, and openly gay and lesbian urbanites who, since the 1970s, had mobilized voters like themselves into a voting bloc capable of swaying police allocations in city budgets. By the late 1980s white gays and their political clout, as many scholars have argued, began serving as an economic base to gentrify deteriorating downtown neighborhoods in global cities like Los Angeles. In short, the training taught officers that white gay and lesbian professionals were productive and law-abiding citizens who, like white suburbanites, motored the mechanisms filling police paychecks. The manual also interpreted the HIV/AIDS epidemic as no longer a threat to white gay and lesbian urbanites' newfound political and economic power. Since 1981 politicians and public health officials, falsely operating under Christian Right claims that HIV/AIDS was a gay disease, had targeted gay neighborhoods as epicenters for disease and crime. A multiple choice test on HIV/AIDS at the end of the manual instructed officers that "most of the world's HIV infected people" were not "Homosexual" but were now "Heterosexual," "In Africa," and "Not Being Treated." The manual further supported these claims by warning officers of "liquid blood product exposure" during "riot control" and to expect most trans people and people of color to be secretive about their sexual practices. Given that the 1992 Rodney King Riots recently took place in neighborhoods of color, the training encouraged officers to protect white gay people under the belief that they were now harmless and disease-free while encouraging officers to be anxious about protecting trans people, sexually closeted people, and poor people of color (irrespective of their stated sexual identity) because they and their neighborhoods were still considered threats to property and prone to be secretive about their sexuality and/ or HIV status. To understand why the Task Force and the LAPD agreed upon such major policing objectives, our article examines two decades of propolice activism led by a predominantly white, middle-class coalition of gay organizations and voters we call "gay moderates." Following Clayton Howard's call to investigate "moderation as an ideology with its own politics and history," we use the term "gay moderates" because it highlights centrist and even conservative strands of LGBT activism that are otherwise obscured by framing LGBT politics as exclusively progressive, liberal, or leftist.8 Gay moderates in Los Angeles rejected the ?extremism? of the homophobic Christian Right and the antiracist queer Left while advancing a politics of respectability centered around distinguishing openly gay and lesbian white gender-conforming professionals from poor people of color, sexually closeted people, and trans and gender-nonconforming people, whose sex practices in mainstream society were still considered criminally suspect, diseased, and risky. Against the backdrop of the AIDS crisis and police violence against poor people of color, gay moderates consistently priori-tized gay community policing and helped redefine popular meanings of gay citizenship so that hiring an out gay cop seemed like a commonsense response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Gay moderates' activism, we argue, eventually conjoined HIV/AIDS public health.

Neglected Narratives, Violent Norms: An Intersectional Analysis on the Everyday Resistance of BIPOC Individuals in the Dutch Queer Scene  / Melchior Deekman.

  2. lhbti
samenvatting: This thesis focuses on the everyday resistance of #BIPoC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) queers in the Netherlands against the violence they experience within the Dutch queer scene. The dominant understanding of queer life in the Netherlands is often based on the experiences of white, homosexual, cis-gendered males. Such an understanding neglects the experiences of BIPOC queers, who face marginalization because of their ethnicity/race, religion, culture, nationality, class, gender-identity, and more. This thesis argues that Dutch queer life is ridden with oppressive structures and normative cultural aspects that render the experiences of everybody that does not want or is not able to conform to the (white) queer status quo invisible. Additionally, The BIPoC queer experience is often overlooked by academia and general Dutch queer organizations like #COCAmsterdam and #Pride. Likewise, the Dutch government and various cultural institutions do not pay attention to the intersecting experiences of Dutch BIPOC queers. Activists, BIPoC individuals, and BIPoC collectives and movements demand change. Due to their efforts, which can be traced back to the first Dutch BIPoC queer organizations of the 70s and 80s, the Dutch queer landscape is changing: BIPoC queer parties, events, support groups, and communities are reformulating what it means to be queer and BIPoC in the Netherlands. The government, the general Dutch queer organizations, cultural and societal organizations, white queers, and academia must begin to include and collaborate with BIPoC queers to ensure the advent of truly inclusive Dutch queer environments.
